Play The Carpenters’ “Rainy Days and Mondays” while you read this post, so you can be one with me in my despair.
I am SO down. And it actually feels like Monday because here in the U.S. (and with the bounty of civil service benefits) yesterday was a taxpayer-sponsored Day Off for me. Thank you, nice Taxpayer.
This cold, dreary, rainy weather is just dampening my will to live. Out of the nearly 10 million people around me in L.A., does anyone else feel melancholy and lethargic? Around 7 p.m., I saw a couple of guys out running down the street — one of them in shorts! It’s freakin’ 50 degrees and sprinkling. I couldn’t believe their balls didn’t immediately shatter like delicate Christmas ornaments slapping against their thighs!
Okay – so to try to make myself feel better, I sat down with some coffee and read my 11 year-old son’s book, 750 Ways to Annoy People.
I don’t know when I’m ever going to learn to not be drinking coffee while reading something funny. Must first put the cup down, THEN laugh obnoxiously like Arnold Horshack.
Here are my Top 12 Ways to Annoy People (from the book):
- When bowling, take your shots overhand.
- When talking with a police officer, refer to him as “General.”
- Make scary faces at babies.
- Laugh for no reason. (Guilty of this one.)
- Put Monopoly money in the collection plate at church.
- Don’t brush your teeth for a week before going to the dentist.
- At the end of a first date, get angry and say: “You don’t have any intentions of marrying me, do you?”
- End every statement by exclaiming, “So sayeth the Lord!”
- After treating friends to a nice dinner out, tell them they’re all leeches.
- Specify that your drive-thru orders are “to go.”
- When you’re introduced to people, ask them for identification.
- Immediately after picking up a woman for a first date, tell her that you have to stop at a drug store and get some condoms. Ask her if she prefers “ribbed” or “smooth.”
I feel better already. I just checked the forecast and we’re headed for glorious sunshine and temperatures in the mid-70’s by Thursday! I can see clearly now the rain is gone. Thanks for putting up with me, folks. Have a Great Week.

A friend of mine on Facebook posted that he was in his socks all day yesterday and felt like playing Monopoly because of the gray, rainy day out in CA.
Oklahoma is full of 60’s and tons of sun. How often is that going to happen? Stay strong! The sun is on it’s way!! I’ll soak up an extra ray or two just for you guys.

Thanks! That’s what friends are for: stealing your sunshine.
For all of you who are elsewhere and have been enjoying L.A.-type weather, can you just take our earthquakes instead?

from that Blogging Granny:
I guess it’s because of my English ancestors, I love a rainy, gloomy day and don’t like the sun and heat. Yeh, so I am weird but rainy days are so great for reading, blogging, napping and maybe even sweeping (ugh) and the rain smells so good. Think the old movie “Singing in the Rain”….

Hi Edelweiza -
When I win the lottery I’m definitely going to “winter” in the warmer climates. I’m thinking Australia from December to March.
And I’d also like to visit my native Philippines (I haven’t been back since my family left in 1971.)

28 degrees and sunny here outside of Philadelphia, but I like the snow – unfortunately we don’t have any now. Hang in there!!

Hi grannyann – One of my best friends also enjoys rainy, gloomy weather and is actually looking to retire to England this year.
I LOVE to nap, in general, but when it’s dark and cloudy, I feel like I might actually slip into a coma.
Hi CoolStuffForDads.com – 28 degrees AND sunny?! I might be able to handle it if the sun’s out (and I’m wearing my Nanook of the North outfit). Thanks for visiting.
PS – I’ve always wanted to take a historical tour of Philadelphia. When is the best time of year to go?

Hi Joe – Fortunately, my mood finally lifted now that Ra the Sun God has returned.
I saw your last blog post (above) and sang along. I definitely like Big Bird’s version over The Carpenters’.

Marissa:
that’s a tough call on the tour. Of course, having spent my entire life in the area I have spent minimal time touring. The horse and buggy rides around Independence Square can be very nice. Fourth of July is certainly an appropriate time but can get crowded and warmer. The Fall is a nice time of year in Pennsylvania with the leaves changing and stuff, and the weather can still be very favorable. It depends a lot on some of your own preferences in terms of crowds, weather, etc.

The horse & buggy rides sound like fun! And I definitely want to go to the Amish parts of PA.
We’ll probably plan on getting out there in late Spring next year. Hopefully, there’s not much rain then. May has always been my lucky month for traveling East, 3 times and never had rain while in NYC.

Spring will be nice, could be rain but it’s not like it rains all the time. Central PA would be a good spot to visit, Lancaster area. Further west is Gettysburg, if you have anyone into history that can be a good place to visit (Philadelphia also has a lot of history, and Valley Forge Park in the Western suburbs of Philly).

YES – Gettysburg! Now that sounds awesome. Thanks CoolStuff. I’ll start researching the places you mentioned.

If you go to Gettysburg, check out Devil’s Den, the kids really like it, there’s a whole bunch of rocks you can climb on. There’s some drop offs as I remember in certain spots so be careful. Check it out at:

Thanks for the link. Great info. My 11 year-old son is really into battle strategies (hence his paintball hobby). And he was just watching something last week about this battle, I think on the History Channel.
