What’s Your Theme Song?

If music is a huge part of your life, then I know you have a soundtrack that covers chapters of personal events and milestones. I’m currently working on a slideshow for my mother-in-law’s 76th birthday party, so I asked her which songs I should use in the project. She said there’s really only one: “My Way” by Frank Sinatra. Knowing what she has endured throughout her life, it’s totally right on.

A theme song can reflect just a fleeting moment in time or an entire life experience. I love music so much that every trivial incident can flash to a song. Just this morning I grabbed the bread from the toaster and instantly channeled Snoop Dogg: “Drop it like it’s hot, drop it like it’s hot!” Lyrics just constantly weave into my day, much to Husband Jace’s dismay because I — can sing as skillfully as I skimboard. Well, according to The Carpenters, “Don’t worry that it’s not good enough – for anyone else to hear.”

What songs make up your soundtrack, during the best of times, the worst of times, or even when you’re just making breakfast?
“I can bring home the bacon – Fry it up in a pan…”

My theme song for this post is The Carpenters’ Yesterday Once More:

PS – There are 4 highly entertaining and informative sites (on my right sidebar) that share my appreciation for music. Nostalgia and Retrospection, Kickin’ It Old School, and 70-s Child all have retro themes, as well as Is This Tight?, which also sprinkles in some hilarious “tight” images. Check them out.

I would say “Oh Very Young” by Cat Stevens, or “King Of The Road“, because I’ve traveled my whole life and never really settled down. I’ve lived in Maine, Mass., Florida, California, and New York. I get around! (well, I did… money’s kind of tight these days……..).

I have almost all of ABBA’s greatest hits on my ipod.

I like Classic Rock but I’m getting tired of the same songs over and over again on yahoo radio which is what is playing at the gym that I work in every day.

I admit to liking disco…..please don’t hurt me.

For me, it would have to be the Beatles song – In My Life

    “There are places I’ll remember
All my life though some have changed
    Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain

All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I’ve loved them all.”

Excuse me. I need to wipe the tears from my eyes.

Wow, that’s a good question and worth reflecting. Like you suggest, the song probably depends on the moment and the mood you are in. I will give it some thought.

My Theme song would have to be
“I’m Too Sexy” by Right said Fred. Why? Do you really have to ask!!!!

Hmmm… The Prayer by Charice, Gary V, and Jed M performed live in Manila last year.

Hi Joe: I like that Cat Stevens song. But I had to look up the lyrics to King of the Road. It’s funny because I KNOW that song, but from memory I could only sing out the title part.

Hi ReformingGeek: Man I can’t believe how popular ABBA is again. Even little kids are into them now. (DISCO?!) I’m still chuckling… You’re lucky I like you :D (I felt my fist ball up for a second.)

Hi Bartholomew Woods: What a great song. I too almost teared up, except I was busy still laughing about disco.

Hi CoolStuffForDads: I wait with bated breath for your answer. (“bated breath” doesn’t really sound appealing.)

Hi Dom is God: When I’m writing checks, I like to sing out “I’m — too sexy for MY BILLS!” (Thanks for stopping by!)

Hi Pinoy Boy: Charice has some serious pipes! I’m just like her, only 25 yrs older and I can’t really sing. But other than that, we’re totally alike. Oh, and I’m taller and probably fatter. But otherwise… (and thanks for visiting!)

OK, I’m feeling like the theme song from Rocky right now.

Awesome! Are you going to run up those steps? I love that scene. I can almost hear the music now.

Sure, I could do that. Philadelphia Art Museum, add it to your destination list!

YES – movie location AND art museum (I love museums!). So, do the tourists all do the cliche thing and take a picture at the top with their arms raised?

  • 12 grannyannNo Gravatar // Mar 9, 2009 at 7:55 pm

Sorry but I am probably the only “non music lover” in the world. The only song I have always liked is “Theme from a Summer Place” – and I am not a summer person. As for singing, I sound so badly I was asked not to sing in the church choir – now that’s bad!!!!

Hi Grannyann: I LOVE that song. I have it on my computer and now I want to hear it. So you were a church choir reject? I would’ve been right there next to ya, sister.

I’d guess a lot of tourists do the steps … 6:30AM, I’m now onto the theme song from 9 to 5 with Jane Fonda and Dolly Parton.

Hehehheh, that was a funny movie. The boss’s nameplate on the door was “F. Hart”.

I can certainly relate to that theme song. And of course there’s Takin’ Care of Business (Bachman Turner Overdrive) and Morning Train (Sheena Easton).

Thanks for the plug! Appreciate it so much.

As for theme songs, there are far too many to list here. As you would guess, a large portion would likely be 80s songs.

I truly love music and it has always been a major part of my life.

If I had to pick one that I really relate to over the past several years it would be a song by Colin Hay called “Waiting For My Real Life to Begin.”

    Fun post. Take care.

That’s a pretty song. I listened to it again on your site. Now I’m in a really reflective mood. Or maybe I just need my afternoon nap…

Hmm . . . the tune I’m humming lately is the ditty in the New Super Mario Bros. (World 1, Level 1). If your 8 year-old plays it every waking hour, it will also get burned into your brain & you’ll find yourself singing it during the day!

This isn’t as nightmarish as it sounds, but sweetly nostalgic because Mario Bros. is one of the first video games that came out in the 80’s, and one of the ones I used to play at arcades all weekend long. When Space Invaders, Tetris etc. couldn’t hold onto success, the roughneck Mario Bros. triumphantly leapt into the future and into our present.

It has an upbeat, catchy tune, plus the game teaches the importance of persistence–kick those turtles over so they don’t come back to bite, and the more you stay in the game the more secrets it will reveal. In the end, the underdog Mario saves the princess!

Hi Koopa Troopa: If it’s this song, it sure is a happy one!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mczF6JlryMQ

I immediately started bopping to it. It put me in an upbeat, hynoptic state. I think I’ll listen to it at my work desk tomorrow!

Thanks for coming by and leaving a comment.
(If it’s another tune, leave us the link, so we too can hum it all day.)

Oopsy, this is the tune I meant (The Mushroom Waltz). Apparently it’s also available in Toothtunes, so I’ll have to get it at Target. That way, it will get in my head first thing in the a.m. and before sleep at night!

That IS cute! That’s the fastest beat waltz I’ve ever heard. Pretty high energy. Maybe I can get it on my cell phone to use for my morning alarm.

Hi Stabbing Pen: I have a Sam Cooke CD, but this song escapes me right now. The lyrics sound really familiar (I looked it up). Now it’s going to drive me nuts. I’ll check Napster and listen to the sample.

    Thanks for visiting!
