I’ve been known to giggle at funny sounding names; I can’t help it. And what’s funny to me is not necessarily hilarious to someone else, especially the name-owner. I never mean any disrespect by it (while I snicker and apologize).
Well, as karma would have it, I too have a very undeserved embarrassing name when it’s spelled backwards. Yep – Assiram. It’s so unfair and it totally stinks! I tried to hide it when I was a kid. My friends and I would play silly word games and make up new words. As soon as we’d get to talking about names, I’d insist on moving on to Pig Latin.
My sister Sherilyn suggested that it could be pronounced Ass I Ram. Yeah, thanks sis, that’s much better. But I’ve finally embraced my backassward name. I’ve turned it into a verb actually. And I experience it often, usually at work.
Examples:
- I got assiram’d with a sh*tload of cases this week. Damn, I’m pooped.
- That mechanic tried to assiram me with an extra charge for repairing my rear suspension!
So there you have it. It’s been awhile since I’ve gone to confession and because it’s Sunday, I just wanted to unload the heavy weight of secrecy and shame. But will I still giggle about certain names? You bet your Ass I Will.

I remember a Bugs Bunny cartoon that had a frustrated Wile E. Coyote say at the end, “Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Mud” before he falls over. Then Bugs comes on and says, “And we all know that Mud spelled backwards is Dumb.”
I don’t know why that made such a lasting impression on me, but it came to mind when you were talking about names spelled backwards.
Have a great week!

“Ass I ram” – lol. Classic.
I worked with a guy once who had the last name – Dread. Awkwardly, he’d also finished his PhD so was known as Dr. Dread.
Nicest guy in the world though – go figure.

Hi Old School: I remember that one. Heheheh. I can hear Bugs Bunny’s nasally voice saying it now.
Hi Chris: Dr. Dread! Ahahaahhah!
Hi Grannyann: AHAHAHAAHAAHA! I’m choking on my lunch right now.
Thanks for the laughs everyone. Ironically, I am in fact getting assiram’d again today at work. Karma is after me for sure for laughing at names. My boss just emailed me to let me know I got some acronyms backwards on something I sent him and then – get this – he jokingly tells me it’s a sign I’m getting OLD. Noooooo…

Thanks Dani! I’ve always wanted a formal British sounding name like: Lady Julia Westmoreland, Duchess of Statham County.

Hi Joe: True. Hey, speaking of names, I just found out that March 27 is National Joe Day! So, if I don’t catch up with you then, I’ll still be celebrating. Here’s a link.

Hahahah. I need a raise in my allowance first. My piggy bank just makes a sad, hollow-sounding rattle lately.
