I Don’t Like Spiders And Snakes

I admit that alot of things scare or worry me. This video of my cat Bengal scares me because, I swear, I didn’t create it. I merely inserted his picture on a software program to create a cute video later of him talking. Then, the next time I started up that program, this video was already on it!

So onto my fear of snakes. On Easter, my family went for a hike to enjoy the warm weather and glorious sunshine. Well, guess who else likes to bask in the sun? That’s right, Mr. Snakeatelli and his ilk. It’s just one of the perils of sharing nature with the underworld.

So as we walked back towards the parking lot, a guy approached and warned us that there’s a rattlesnake at the entrance. What the hell kind of a snake hangs out at the entrance of a hiking trail. Is he a prankster-type that’s going to leap out, scare park visitors and tell his fellow snakes in the bushes, “Ha! Did you hear that one guy scream like a girl?” Sick bastards, those snakes.

So, upon hearing about said jerk-snake, I immediately start commanding the troops. I yell out to my son Ryan, “You – go 10 meters ahead and take point!” To Husband, “Jace, clear that quadrant of the hillside!” To daughter Jordan, “Cover the rear, while I call in air support. We’re gonna need reinforcement!”

No one batted an eye and everyone just kept moseying along, oblivious to the lurking danger ahead. They all know that Mom over-worries everything. “Fine then,” I shrugged. “I’m not sucking any venom out of anybody today!” But I did set my bionic ear volume to high, just in case.

So with all these scary things going on lately, I REALLY want to go back to the sweet days of childhood, where all I had to worry about was – Nothing. Now there are pirates, swine flu, the end of the world in 2012, deadly kidnappings for ransom (in Mexico and U.S. border states), and sharks.

To make me feel better, Jace snagged a vintage 1972 lunchbox for me off E-bay. I first saw it on Joe’s site, 70s Child. It’s so “me”. When I look at it, I’m reminded to not worry about stuff and just enjoy today. Because someday, these will be the moments I”ll be reminiscing about, probably while I’m hiding out in my bomb shelter in 2012.

I LOVE how it says “Women’s Lib”. Hahaha. I haven’t heard THAT in a long time.

Damned wildlife! You can’t even appreciate nature anymore with all the pesky creatures and poisonous plants! Lets bulldoze it all so that we can enjoy the nice weather! And what is with the beach? All that sand sucks! It would be so nice if the parking lot ended at the water line! :)

I had a Hair Bear Bunch lunchbox when I was a kid, but that’s because I watched the Banana Splits! LMAO!!!

Hey since Jace is being so generous with the collectibles these days, see if he’ll get me that Maskatron NRFB… you know, the ones that usually run up to $250 by auction’s end…

Don’t worry Marissa, everyone’s afraid of something. I’m kinda afraid of the fox that moved in near our house and her new family she is raising…

Otin: It sure would be considerate of the Beach Manufacturing Company to put the parking lot right up to the water and use astro-turf instead of sand.

C.B. Jones: That’s pretty much how I feel about Paris Hilton too!

Joe: $250!!! Egads. I did see an original Bionic Woman doll starting at $249. I was hoping the decimal was just in the wrong place.

Shawn: LOL. Present company excluded. As well as funny sharks. So if you ever lose your sense of humor — you’re outta here! :D

Otin: Meme – something (usually an idea) that spreads quickly from person to person via the internet. It’s pronounced to rhyme with Jim Beam. Not may-may or mee-mee. Okay, kay?

Jim: By “fox”, do we mean the 70s/80s definition (as in hottie) or is there a real fox next door? If it’s the first one, then you don’t have to worry unless she comes by “to borrow sugar” when Mrs. CoolStuff is out.

I am with you – I hate snakes and spiders also. Not too far from here they have the Okeene Rattlesnake Hunt. At least it gets rid of a lot of snakes but you won’t catch me going to it.

Otin: That’s funny – Copycat. You’re right. They would never call a copycat serial killer a meme-killer.

GrannyAnn: Interesting! I like the idea of a
snake hunt, but I’ll watch from the car. I really hate spiders and most all bugs. I kill every bug I come across. No mercy.

ReformingGeek: I could see you stomping it to death.

Chris: Yep – 2012. Nice knowing you.

Marissa, it was the animal fox, I saw her pups this morning and they don’t seem that afraid of humans. But now that you mention it, a “fox” lending out sugar worries me more!

  • 15 marissaNo Gravatar // Apr 27, 2009 at 7:03 am

Jim: Hahah. Actually, I’m surprised that mama fox doesn’t feel too threatened because of her pups. Hope you don’t have any small pets.

Foxes seem like they’d be confused about their identity. After all, they look and act like cats, but are actually in the dog family. I wonder if they get teased for that?

I can totally see them getting teased. And does that mean they would be liked by both dog and cat people or scorned by them? I did see a fox jump a fence one time like a cat, it was pretty amazing.

Old School: My son saw the lunchbox and wanted to know why I just didn’t buy a new one. Silly kid, doesn’t know the value of the Real Deal. New one – bah!

Jim: Fox jumping like a cat. They like to show off like that. I wonder if they do anything dog-like. Do they growl like a dog – or hiss, in which case, they’re more snake-like? Now, I ‘m really confused.

  • 19 Jim @ CoolStuffForDads.comNo Gravatar // Apr 27, 2009 at 12:40 pm

I think I heard them bark like a dog a couple times, I bet they too are confused.

I saw a fox jump a fence one time! I was chasin’ her with my chainsaw, and that good lookin babe scaled a 5 foot chain link like it was nothing, guess if I’m gonna get me one, I need to go after the slower ones!

That lunch box is rad! For some reason I was reminded of me carrying my lunch money in one of those anacin tins when I was a wee little girl. They’d probably kick me out of school now.

    For me, it’s centipedes.

They send a shiver down my spine. We have them in our house. I’m told it’s a good thing because they eat every other insect around. As far as I’m concerned it would only a good thing if they looked like butterflies.

For your fear of snakes, I wish I could give you my old beagle. He likes em. Eats the snake and their babies. He also will rid your back yard of opossum, birds, and those pesky squirrels that drop pecans on his head while he naps. He does smell though. Let me know next time you go hiking.
